In the 60s, some of the anti war protesters were actual Communists supporting so-called “people’s movements” wherever they appeared, whereas others believed that the cost to the U.S. (and in many cases to them personally) was just too high.
I had some sympathy for the latter view when it was expressed rationally, although as a proponent of the Truman Doctrine” of opposition to Communist expansion, I voluntarily served in the Army. I happened to be stationed in Korea, and came to appreciate how much U.S. support of South Korea improved the lives of the people there.
