I'm a swing voter and we are the only ones you should be concerned about. As crazy as some of Trump's behavior has been, he is still FAR out-crazied by the Democrats. If nothing else changes, I'm voting for Vance in 2028.

Let’s see who the Dem candidate is in 2028. That will matter a lot. Vance is likely the early front runner, but Democrats will hang every unpopular thing Trump does around his neck if/when he wins the nomination, and probably effectively.

Meh. It is apparently a fake quote but true nonetheless. When Zhou Enlai as asked what he thought about the French Revolution, he said "It's too soon to tell". You are missing the forest for the trees. The key for revival is for the Democrats to develop some sort of positive vision, not hang around and wait for the Republicans to screw up.

Expand full comment

True. Because as much as Republicans screw up, the Dems always manage to pander to the SJ Left and screw up even more.

Yeah, I almost feel sorry for Schumer. Not that he has a positive vision either but he is at least a competent tactician. The Democrats need some sort of charismatic figure to take Ruy's vision and lead.

It's always the economy, no matter who the POTUS is, & that often doesn't have that much influence... we'll see.

I really don't like T's style, at all. The problem is that there are no longer rules or norms. Simply put, Trump doesn't care if he's caught doing something unlawful, unconstitutional, dishonest, or corrupt. His attitude is "try and stop me....cause I'm going to punch back twice as hard". And he's surrounded himself w/ a lot of "yes" people.

Greenland/Canada ‘take-over’ threats is more than awful, imo.

However, he’s doing some things ‘right’ or at least according to plan. He campaigned on illegal immigration, as your article mentioned. It’s way down. Due to however he’s doing it, it’s down. And the w/drawal of funds, temporarily from Ukraine did have the desired results of getting European nations to discuss upping their contributions, etc. They’ve since realized just how much the US provides. And getting China out of control of the Panama Canal. Striking the pirates on the Red Sea. Vs Biden's shaking his finger & saying "don't cross the line, again", then they crossed the line again, & Biden administration did absolutely nothing...

2028: Well, maybe something will happen, peacefully in his sleep, to Trump before then, & Vance will become POTUS, who knows who would be VP... perhaps Republicans could have a run-off?? and get a sane nominee or perhaps Vance could go back to his old self before he began kissing up to Trump...

The attacks on Tesla, vandalism doesn't sit well. No sympathy for those who are antisemitic, cause it's the same as any prejudice. No sympathy for the elite universities losing money. No sympathy for USPS going private after consistently losing billions of dollars. So DOGE can come across negative, however shows some positive outcome.

Dems - still a very rough road ahead. IMO, as long as AOC & Sanders get the most attention, not a chance to get independents or middle voters, imo.

I'll reply to my own post w/ a PS:

heard the phrase "brokeism", a take-off of woke, referring to the fact our country is broke, & the Dems were making it worse, so perhaps bending a 'few' rules in order to get things back on track might be ok w/ the general public, except of course the far left. Altho I'm not sure if the general public is aware of how dire the debt is....

will the nation miss the Dept of Education? DEI was another name for racism.

There seems to be a kernel of truth to a lot of what goes on, ie, U.S.A.I.D, HOW it's now being dealt w/ is bad, but it IS a bureaucratic nightmare.

Dems continue to scream ILLEGAL - then the MAGA do the whataboutisms, which are plenty.

The trouble is that nothing trump is doing will save us any significant amounts of money, unless, by making social security so dysfunctional that people can't enroll, thereby effectively increasing the retirement age. The entire federal workforce accounts for less then 5% of the federal budget. The biggest portions of the budget are Social security, Medicare,Medicaid, the Military, and interest on our existing debt. There is no way out of our spiral with out BOTH cuts to the first three AND increases in revenue through judicious tax increases and elimination of loopholes. There is also waste, fraud and abuse. But, guess what, reducing staffing is more likely to enable skulduggery than to eliminate it. Every new IRS agent hired brings in around 6 times their salary and benefits in increased revenue.

so, there's a definite agreement from me, oh, ETA, increasing retirement age, w/ a 'grandfathering clause of ?? set is NOT at all a bad idea -

otherwise, what's the dem's solution??

I've had relatives who worked for the Fed gov. They got out because of seeing the waste, fraud, ie, cheating on mileage, taking sick days, etc (many etc)... And anyone who knows anything about Fed employees knows once hired, they can get transferred ANYWHERE in the country. Once hired almost IMPOSSIBLE to get fired. So, that's quite possibly why the firings are now during probationary period. Looking back during Biden admin, Fed employment/NEW positions, jumped consistently.

So, even tho these decreases won't make any sort of a dent in our deficit (those interest payments you mentioned!! which the general public needs to be educated about), there are plenty of people who have had experiences, awful experiences, w/ Fed employees, so thinking about many of them losing their jobs might not cause any heartaches.

Forcing those employees out, forcing Welfare to Work (Clinton did a good job/a good start), then tapping into philanthropy organizations (yes, liberals AND conservatives!!) can help fund start-up businesses... you mentioned taxes. Illegal aliens have been a huge subject during this election yr. Fine the companies that hire them, again, get able bodied US citizens off welfare filling in those jobs, paying them a decent wage, but NOT $25 an hour at the taco stand in the airport - those jobs are entry-level, jobs for teenagers, ya know. I know 1 teen who is graduating this yr AND HAS NEVER HAD A JOB, MOM & DAD GIVE HIM EVERYTHING. Anyway, more fines/more wages on the books, less welfare...slow process, but more than what's been going on.

how 'bout some more possible solutions? Passing actual laws around immigration? I haven’t seen any of those. Instead, it seems like most people are content with executive orders and it just waiting for everything to change every 4 or 8 years. Where are the protests in favor of entitlement reform? Haven’t seen any of those either. I’m speaking as a right of center Never Trumper until this last time when the lies & hatred from the left got the best/worst of me...

Protests from the left are setting fires to Teslas...

Find solutions, not just complaints about 'the other side'

Why are we so digital? Either one or zero? Criticizing Trump's methods doesn't mean that I deny the problem exists, merely that his tactics seem aimed more at creating chaos and headlines rather than solving the problem.

I work in construction, and liken the current challenge to doing a major remodel of an office building while the workers are still there and working. You have to go about it very systematically rather than with a wrecking ball.

You're right, great analogy. I don't like his style at all. Some of it is getting some positive results. Some won't - it's a 'wait & see' now.

It's a race to the bottom for both parties. The democratic base will come back unless the party massacres itself in the 2026 and 2028 primaries. The keys are swing voters and independents. Which party will they hate the least?

Right now, I hate the GOP the least.

Nowhere to go but down. His incoherent tariff "plan" has not fully kicked and his mass deportations policy has created a lot of noise with little results to show for it. America's standing in the world is at its lowest since the great depression. All in 70 days.

I'm a swing voter and I love the results so far: vastly decreased numbers of illegal border crossings (90%?); strong support for Israel and a serious crackdown on Ivy League anti-Jewish harassment; post pubescent males banned from competing against females in sports - which was an INSANE policy to begin with (why would I ever trust the Dems again after that?); and prioritizing American interests over "global" interests. I'm a swing voter and I have zero regrets for choosing Trump.

Isn't what is happening in the Middle East a "global" interest?

"Little results" might also be the product of judges across the nation blocking his orders? Another way to nullify the election.

That's been happening since 2008. Judges blocked Obama's orders, Trump I's, and Biden's. A little late to be calling foul now.

Barack Obama (2009–2017): During his eight-year presidency, federal judges issued 12 nationwide injunctions against his administration’s policies

Joe Biden (2021–2025): Through the end of his third year in office (January 2024), the Harvard Law Review documented 14 nationwide injunctions against Biden’s administration

Donald Trump (First Term, 2017–2021, and Second Term, 2025–present):

First Term: Trump’s initial four-year term saw an unprecedented 64 nationwide injunctions

Second Term (January 2025–present): In two months of his second term (January–February 2025), reports indicate at least 15 nationwide injunctions were issued.

So yeah Minsky, it's the exact same thing. 🙄

If there is one thing this independent voter truly does NOT care about , it's " America's standing in the world." To me, that sounds like a neo-con/deep state slogan used to justify the foreign policy establishment consensus . Why should we care how foreign elites view us? But if you want to know why America is unpopular abroad: 1. Israel 2. foreign wars in general.

Although supporting Ukraine by running a proxy war with Russia ( under Biden) may play well in Europe, it was not popular anywhere outside of Europe. ( I lived in Europe for 20 years and I have family in Algeria, UK and France and have many international friends and family members) .

I agree he has alienated Canada and undermined Poilievre and boosted the creepy deep state bankster, Mark Carney. The Canada thing baffles me. Why in the heck would we want to add them to our country.? They elected Trudeau. They would recreate a permanent democrat majority.

A country with government owned press that's all in on censorship, that confiscates bank accounts without warrants, that promotes Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) (almost 5% of all deaths), and has a substandard health care system. No thanks.

I'm pretty sure Trump doesn't want to admit Canada to the Union. He just enjoys the wailing and gnashing of teeth that such proposals induce. Remember, the guy is at heart an insult comic/ shock jock. The only successful business venture he ever had was The Apprentice.

Besides, admitting 39M Canadians would not alter our electoral dynamics in his favor. If an ardent Marxist is a 0 and a firebreathing fascist conservative is a 10, then most American Democratic lawmakers are a 4 and most of our Republican representatives are around an 8. Bernie and AOC are a 2. Most Canadian conservatives are at most a 6. If allowed to vote in our elections the vast majority of Canadians would vote Democrat.

You'll care when those foreigners decide that US T-bills are not the best place to park their money. We have accumulated 30+Trn in debt with very little pain to show for it. Why? Because we were the big dog, with a predictable government that mostly played by the rules and had a track record of thumping skulls to keep the world order in our image.

Now, Trump and his team are smashing the machinery and relationships that keep our government running. How long before today's potential investors begin to worry that they won't get able to get their money out because the next batch won't buy in.

When you're this far in debt, you're basically operating in a Ponzi scheme. And Trump is no Bernie Madoff, more like a street hustler playing three card monte. With stable, predictable government we might have a decade or more to deal with our situation before our credit goes bad. As it is, investors are already taking note of where the exit signs are.

A new poll everyday with commentary to match. Who cares? What have the polls predicted right in a long time. What I see plainly is a Dem party whose only claim to do anything is to stack the lower courts against Trump. That all changes as the cases climb the appellate ladder. It’s a new way of doing business. It needs a new way to be looked at and reported on. Trump isn’t hurting as much as the pundits.

Here's what I expect to happen because it's what I believe is strategy. This group knew they were going to have to make some really bold moves, even unpopular moves early on because the starting line was so far from a realistic place. First, you have to get rid of the people who will hamper your administration. Then, you have to reset the economy because it's overvalued and has to come down to a reasonable level of reality. Next, you have to throw out tons of Executive orders to get the court cases moving as quickly as possible and to do that, you have to shock people into taking the cases. My prediction is that poll numbers will continue to go down until November or December 2025. The faucets will be turned on at that time or maybe a month earlier. All of it will be explained, Trump and Vance will come out and thank everyone for standing by them (even though it will be a low number by then) and the next years will be win after win after win. Especially for the middle-class. I could be entirely wrong, but that's my gut instinct.

Trouble is there's no good answers for Trump. We have another 15 months to go before the midterm primaries, and does anyone think that either party primary is going to produce more moderate candidates? In the majority of districts, the primary voters are unlikely to be deterred by either the destruction of Trump's policies or the Democrat's failure to mount a coherent alternative. The Republican primary crowd are simply reveling in the bonfire and the Democrats are determined not to back down because their beliefs are right. Hence, come the General, most districts will have the same choice between delusional extremists.

Add to this that we could well be in a recession, with a national debt which is continuing to swell exponentially, forcing up treasury yields as bond buyers lose faith, and be watching as the Chinese blockade Taiwan and Russia continues to munch away at Ukraine.

But god help any candidate who was to propose raising taxes, cutting benefits, raising the retirement age, or actually reducing pork. Unless you promise a free lunch, nobody is coming to your tent revival.
